Let's Talk About Water!

We have all heard about the importance of drinking water but what's the logic behind it? Today we are going to explore why it is important to drink water to achieve a healthier life!

More than half of an individual's body weight is made of water, which is roughly 60%, depending on weight, age, and overall health status. Every body system and body function relies on water to maintain proper function; therefore, it is important to intake a healthy amount of water daily! There are many important responsibilities water has but let's keep it simple!


Water directly effects circulation and how hydrated muscles stay. Dehydrated muscles result in tight muscles which impede circulation, increasing soreness, tension, decreasing mobility, increasing risk of injury, to name a few. Therefore, regular massage therapy and adequate water intake is important to overall bodily function!


Let’s break it down. The techniques used in massage therapy improve circulation by not only moving along excess fluid (edema) but also stimulating the lymphatic system (movement of lymph) which is responsible for excreting toxins in the body. The kidneys are then stimulated to eliminate the excess fluid and toxins moved through the manipulation of the muscles and tissues. Therefore, it is important to drink water not only throughout the day but especially after receiving a massage to replace the fluid eliminated and aid in flushing out toxins as well as decrease potential muscle soreness, headache, fatigue, nausea, etc. that may be experienced after receiving a massage.

The easiest way to determine how much water to drink each day would be to divide your body weight in pounds in half which will give you the amount of ounces of water you should be drinking every day to stay adequately hydrated. For an example, 150 pound person’s goal would be to drink 75 ounces of water per day. It is important to space it out throughout the day to avoid overloading the kidneys and for the body to adequately absorb the water because the body is only able to absorb so much water at a time. Therefore, drinking 4-6 ounces every half hour, gives the body the ability to absorb the water instead of just flushing it through.


Keeping a water bottle with you is a helpful way to remember to drink plenty of water. Also, setting alarms on your phone or smartwatch is a good way to remember to intake water every 30-minutes.


In conclusion, adequate water intake is very important for overall health and wellness and can be easily maintained by drinking 4-6 ounces every 30-minutes.
